Maintining the Third Wave Strategy doctrine of:

"Strategy Practice at the Standard of a Profession"

Our history: A grounding in corporate strategy

The SII was formed in 2025, born out of an independent research arm of a consulting group founded in 2011, now known as PH Strategy and Leadership. The primary focus for the SII is the pursuit of excellence in the practice of Corporate Strategy and Leadership ethically enabled by Artificial Intelligence and other forms of augmented intelligence when appropriate.

The SII has access to empirical research collected and/or developed as an active part of the Strategic Management Institute (SMI), as well as practical experience gleaned from our work in consulting, executive education and facilitation. Publishing has long been the core of our services with the interests of the strategy practitioner at its core.

From Strategic planning to Third Wave Strategic management

Recent years have made one thing clear: major disruption is now part of the normal business cycle, not an exception. Geopolitical conflicts, energy and supply‑chain crises, and accelerating climate impacts are creating shocks that ripple across markets, technology, regulation and customer behaviour, leaving behind permanent discontinuities rather than temporary blips.quantive+2

For organisations that can’t adapt, these breaks are an existential threat. For those that build real adaptive capacity, they are a huge opportunity: to win share, enter new markets and even create new industries through invention. Above all, these events remind us how deeply interconnected primary and related industries have become—and how important it is to read, and respond to, those connections early.

Positioning your company within a strong industry ecosystem can soften the downside of disruption and amplify the upside. When shocks hit, the pain in one sector is often offset by gains in others (for example, shifts from global to local suppliers, or from physical to digital channels); firms embedded in ecosystems that span this variation can redirect demand, share capabilities and turn turbulence to their advantage.

The emerging environment is dominated by organisations anchored in robust ecosystems and communities that are ready to capitalise on these shifts. They don’t just adapt to what is; they invent and transform into what could be, using their networks to sense change earlier, mobilise faster and co‑create new forms of value.

Our philosophy: Realising what 'could be' through critical strategic thinking

Future corporation is the embodiment of a network of corporations that combine to form organic, living systems. At the highest level, this network is referred to as a Corporate Collaborative System. This terminology and concept is discussed in some detail in our book, The Corporation of the Future (Routledge, 2022) and our podcast: CFO Strategy Brief 5: Architecting AI‑enabled Corporate Collaborative Systems; https://csosandbox.buzzsprout.com

Our Mission: the realisation of continual professional development

To engage in the development and dissemination of excellence in the practice of corporate strategy, leadership and management. From research to implementation the SMI adopts a collaborative approach to its work which in turn is conducted within the construct of an Integrated Value System, as illustrated below:
  • Research: Contribute to the development of management science in general, public opinion at large, corporate policy, contemporary strategy practice, and strategic leadership.
  • Understand and Evaluate: Design, develop, align, integrate and disseminate the many sources of knowledge from the program illustrated above to evolve methods, methodologies, practices and procedures from, the constructs that make a positive contribution to commercial, societal and institutional decision-making effectiveness.

  • Engage: Distribute and implement learnings, experiences and findings in the form of programs of strategically aligned, organisational transformation and renewal.
  • Learn and Regenerate: Enhance the strength of strategy practitioners and the institutions with whom they work.

Continual professional development as a system
